Cathar Castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse

The Cathar castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse are two of the most iconic medieval fortresses in the Cathar Country, located in the Aude region of southern France. They offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and tell a fascinating story tied to the Cathars’ resistance during the crusade against heresy

The castle of Quéribus stands atop a rocky peak at 728 meters above sea level, near Cucugnan. It was the last stronghold of Cathar resistance, playing a crucial role during the Albigensian Crusade, and was captured in 1255 by royal forces, marking the end of Catharism.

The castle later served as a royal fortress to protect the border with Aragon. Its polygonal keep features a vaulted Gothic-style hall and offers stunning views of the Corbières and, on clear days, as far as the Pyrenees.

Its dramatic location on the mountainside has earned it the nickname “the guardian of vertigo”

The castle of Peyrepertuse is perched at 800 meters above sea level near Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse.

Founded before the Cathar period, it became a refuge for Cathars fleeing persecution. After the fall of the Cathars, it came under the control of the French crown and was integrated into the defensive line of France’s borders. It is a monumental structure with three distinct enclosures.

Climbing to the upper section, known as the San Jordi keep, offers exceptional panoramic views. Due to its size and complex architecture, it is sometimes referred to as the “Versailles of the Peaks”

These two sites, set in spectacular natural surroundings, are must-sees for history enthusiasts, hikers, and lovers of stunning landscapes.

The access paths, while sometimes demanding, provide a unique immersion into Cathar history. The two castles are often visited together due to their geographical proximity and historical connection.

The Gorges of Galamus

The Gorges of Galamus are a spectacular natural site located on the border between the Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales regions in southern France.

They form an impressive canyon carved by the Agly River over millions of years, offering breathtaking landscapes and a unique experience for nature and adventure enthusiasts

The gorges stretch over approximately two kilometers with limestone cliffs rising more than 500 meters high.

The Agly River winds its way below, creating crystal-clear pools and waterfalls. A narrow and winding road, carved into the rock, allows cars to pass through the gorges, but it requires caution due to its dramatic and vertiginous layout

Marked trails allow visitors to explore the gorges on foot, with impressive viewpoints overlooking the canyon and its surroundings. The Agly River is perfect for canyoning, featuring rappelling, jumps into the water, and aquatic passages. The small Saint-Antoine de Galamus hermitage, built into the cliffside, is a place of reflection and history. Likely dating back to the 7th century, it is accessible via a steep path and offers panoramic views of the gorges

The Gorges of Galamus are home to exceptional biodiversity. Visitors may spot vultures, falcons, and a variety of Mediterranean vegetation, including green oaks, boxwood, and endemic plants

The Gorges of Galamus are ideal for a day trip, combining natural beauty, outdoor activities, and historical discoveries.
